Let’s make learning meaningful

At Filasez, we always strive to make learning meaningful. As an educator, I’ve encountered moments of anxiety, realizing how crucial it is to address this with children. There’s a fundamental knowledge that should not be postponed: they need to learn it in order to continue learning, as this foundational learning is essential for developing critical citizens. What am I talking about? Reading and writing.

In moments of panic, the first thing that comes to mind is the quick fix: systematic, repetitive work… As they say, «Practice makes perfect.» Yes, I completely agree with this mindset; practicing is indeed the most effective way to improve. However, depending on how it’s practiced, it can also be demotivating, overwhelming, and ultimately meaningless for the children. Consequently, it will hardly generate real learning.

In those moments of urgency, I like to remind myself that we are not in a race; it’s better for things to take a bit more time if we can ensure that what we do has a genuine impact on them. There are many paths to achieving a goal, and finding one that aligns with their personal interests will always be the winning approach.

In the image below, you can see how we’ve created a writing notebook to record everything we are learning. This way, we use writing as a tool, practicing it in response to a real need: documenting our learnings. Thus, we not only delve deeper into our main objective but also enrich ourselves with new knowledge.
